HOUSING DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE FOR CARINI BERRY FARM
We recently heard that Carini Berry Farm will possibly sell to a housing developer out of West Hartford. The story behind the sale is heartbreaking. The owner of the land, who is a Carini by birth, lost her son who had been tending to the farm. He left behind a family, including his wife and three girls. Development plans, which propose a subdivision of 19 homes, were submitted to Town Hall last week and are under initial review. Residents living nearby would like to see this tucked-away gem, off Chestnut Hill Road, saved. There are many parts that need to fall in place before anything happens, including a concrete sale and a checklist of town approvals. We will keep you posted on how this plays out.
POPULAR CHILDREN’S RETAIL STORE CLOSING (Scoop from our intern, Madison Schulman)
Gymboree recently filed for bankruptcy and is beginning to close all of it’s 540 stores, including the one located in The Shops at Somerset Square. This is the second time the retail giant has filed for Chapter 11. They are closing their Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores so they can focus on their Janie and Jack brand.
NEW RESTAURANT AT BUCK’S CORNER, by Madison Schulman
A new Chinese food restaurant recently opened in Buck’s Corner near Lotties. The Golden House is run by two cousins, Alex Cheng and JiaFei Dong. They also have a location in Durham, CT. The restaurant offers traditional Chinese food with a healthy twist. They steam many of their dishes and toss them in your choice of sauce as opposed to frying directly in oil. Their extensive menu boasts many different classics such as fried rice, chicken lo mein and honey chicken. Favorites such as General Tso’s Chicken and Sesame Chicken are made somewhat differently, focusing on using only white meat. They also do takeout. Stop in for a taste and tell them we sent you.
ONGOING AND NEW PROJECTS UPDATE
-We have learned that there will be new owners of 2333 and 2343 Main Street before the end of February. These are the buildings across from the fountain where Liquid Nirvana, Bollywood, and Cycling Concepts are located. There are some exciting plans for that location. We will let you know when they are more concrete.
-There is a proposal to build a 20,000 square foot office building at 340 Hebron Avenue. This is near the first rotary as you are coming into town on the left. Right now, there is a house where Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management is located. The plan will be reviewed by Town Plan & Zoning this week. We will keep you posted.
– The demolition of the old Red Geranium took place last week. This property has been purchased by Rosy Kapur, owner of Liquid Nirvana. They plan to build something new in that location. Construction will start this Spring.
-You may have noticed a wire fence at the corner of Hebron Avenue and Sycamore Street. This is in preparation for demolition of those buildings to make way for 400 Hebron Avenue. We showed you a drawing a of this new building a few months ago. It will be 20,000 square feet and include retail and restaurant space. See below.
-Demolition of the interior of the old Piatti is complete, making way for Square Peg Pizza & Arcade. They are looking to reopen the drive through behind the building for use as a convenient way to pick up take out. That is being reviewed this week at Town Hall. Construction starts SOON and they hope to open by mid-April.

*Equilibrium Brewery out of Middletown, NY is launching in CT February 4th and The Taproom at The Beamhouse will have the exclusive. Kind of exciting right? Local beer lovers rejoice.
*The Spicy Green Bean opens in their new location THIS WEEK. They held a soft opening this past Saturday with family and friends. Here are some pictures of the inside.
*The town of Manchester is offering no interest loans to entrepreneurs or landlords, up to $250,000. The initiative is called Downtown 2020 and is part of a larger plan to revitalize and transform downtown Manchester. Worth looking into if you are searching for space for your business!
