FEATURED SCOOP: COE BANCROFT STATE FARM IS YOUR OLD SCHOOL AGENT...S. GLASTONBURY BREWERY NOW OPEN

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

**HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! We are off next week and return July 15th with new SCOOP. Hope you all have a wonderful Fourth of July!

FEATURED SCOOP: COE BANCROFT OF STATE FARM IS 4TH GENERATION INSURANCE

Insurance is the lifeline for your home, auto, and personal matters. It’s what gives you peace of mind during the worst of times. And, there is no one who knows this better than Coe Bancroft of StateFarm. He is the 4th generation of his family working in insurance and remembers vividly the home phone calls his dad would take at all hours when clients faced crisis. He has since made it his life’s work to be there for people like his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. It’s an old school mindset in a modern age of computers and impersonal customer service. Coe is there on the phone or IN PERSON for EVERY CLIENT EVERY STEP OF THE WAY through tough times. A Dartmouth graduate, Coe has been a Glastonbury resident and business owner in town for years. What matters to him is putting things in place for people so that when the unexpected happens, they are ready. It’s a mighty job to help someone feel that sense of security, but Coe’s calm demeanor and true love for this process are what set him and his staff apart. They are like a family (unplanned, they dressed alike for our photo shoot!) and treat clients like family too. Contact them at 860.633.3736 to find out how they can help you feel secure.

S. GLASTONBURY BREWERY OPEN SPECIAL HOURS FOR JULY 4TH!

We were excited to visit the new Hops on the Hill Brewery in South Glastonbury last week for their premier night. IT’S AWESOME...such a gorgeous setting with some delicious, easy-drinking beers. They have covered the gamut for beer lovers including an Amber, an IPA, a Pale Ale, a Porter, and a Lager. All were super tasty. Their hours are Fridays 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturdays and Sundays 1:00 to 6:00 PM. But…drum roll please…EXCLUSIVE INFO FOR SCOOP FOLLOWERS…they will be open July 4th from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. What better way to celebrate America than at an old farm in a New England town? CHEERS to that.

WHERE’S WALDO SCAVENGER HUNT

River Bend Book Shop is hosting a MEGA SCAVENGER HUNT! During July, Find Waldo Local will include a search for the iconic children’s book character at more than 20 local businesses. Kids can pick up a passport at River Bend Book Shop or Welles-Turner Memorial Library to find out where to go and see if they can find Waldo! They get a stamp each time they find him at participating businesses. Kids love a search and we think this is a pretty cool one. If you get 20 or more businesses, you will be entered to win a grand prize which will be drawn August 3rd. Don’t miss out on the fun!

GOODBYE MAX AMORE…THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!

We have been following Max Amore on social media for quite some time, but have been moved recently by their posts saying goodbye after 25 years serving customers in town. We keep running into people who say how they had their first date there or their annual family dinner or anniversary. SO. MANY. MEMORIES. It’s literally the end of an era! Check out some of their farewell photos below. We included their Instagram descriptions for effect.

ODDS & ENDS…

*West Hartford is one step closer to a Food Truck Park. Plans were approved for Gastro Park at 637 New Park Avenue. We-Ha.com reports that the town council approved an amendment that changed a parking requirement and approved beer and wine. Check out a rendering of this cool spot.

*The Bushnell Park Beer Garden is now OPEN! The new hot spot in Hartford is a collaboration between Hog River Brewing, Hanging Hills Brewery and Harry’s Pizza. Turnout was impressive for their opening day. They will continue through the summer to September 28th every Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.

FEATURED SCOOP: BILLY GRANT FARMS DINNERS...FIREHOUSE SUBS CLOSES

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

FEATURED SCOOP: BILLY GRANT FARM DINNERS

If you haven’t tried one of Billy Grant’s farm dinners at Rose’s Berry Farm, we highly recommend it. The setting is true Glastonbury and the food is unmatched. We had the pleasure of attending the dinner last Friday and it was incredible. EVERY. SINGLE. BITE. was unreal. It started with a charcuterie board and passed apps. The meal was Caesar salad topped with the best croutons ever, a savory spring risotto, roasted lamb chop (we don’t even eat lamb, but loved every bite), and finally, a lemon pound cake with fresh Rose’s Berry Farm strawberries. We can’t say enough about it. And, you are in luck because there are 2 more dinners in August and September. So, gather up some of your besties and click HERE for tickets. Pics of this awesome night below.

FIREHOUSE SUBS CLOSES

We are sad to report that Firehouse Subs CLOSED. Owners, Jeff and Jen Finnerty (Glastonbury residents) contacted us to say that they had to make the difficult decision to close both of their locations. They had recently opened in Bristol. They explained that it did not make financial sense for them and wanted to do what was best for their family. They were such an intergral part of the community hosting Chamber events and supporting first responders. They will be missed! Opening a business is so brave…we wish them much luck in their next endeavor.

BELL STREET HORSE FARM OPERATORS BUY NEW FARM

The owners of Hillside Stable recently purchased a 45-acre horse farm in Ellington and will move to that location after a few minor renovations. They will still offer boarding options, services and lessons at the same prices. The farm on Bell Street has been sold to developers. The barns will be torn down to make way for housing. We are sad to see this tranquil spot go…it’s been a staple since our childhood. The new development is called Stallion Ridge and proposes 19 new homes. Below is an aerial shot of the new farm owned by Hillside Stable.

COMMERCE EATERY CONFUSION

We heard from multiple people that Commerce Eatery was closed. Last week, several people contacted us asking if we knew anything because there was a sign on the door saying they were temporarily closed, but their Google listing had said they were permanently closed (see below). Now their Google listing says they are OPEN. We contacted them and they would not say what was happening, but explained that they plan to do something with the Glastonbury Citizen soon. We will let you know if we hear anything further.

CBD OIL BOUTIQUE TO DEBUT ON MAIN STREET GLASTONBURY

Your CBD Store will open at 2239 Main Street in Glastonbury just one week from today (June 24th). This is diagnolly across from Rankin Road in one of the big old houses on Main. Owner, Linda Muraski is excited to bring this product to town. Let’s talk about CBD…shall we? Cannabidiol is a compound found in industrial hemp plants. This is NOT THC (the psychoactive compound in marijuana that produces a high). The health benefits are reportedly endless, but are notably most beneficial for people suffering from arthritis, anxiety, recurring pain, addiction and PTSD. Users have said some of the products literally stop an anxiety attack dead in its tracks or have been miraculous in relieving arthritis. FOR. REAL. This is not regulated by the FDA, but has gained a huge following in the last several years as a natural alternative to pain medications that can often be addictive. Products at Your CBD Store are sourced from Colorado and are more pure than others. The space is upscale, bright, and beautiful. Read more about Your CBD Store HERE or visit them on Main Street starting next Monday.

CODING SCHOOL TO OPEN IN GLEN LOCHEN

The Coder School is coming to Glastonbury! GHS graduate, Chirayu Shah and his wife, Vaishali are opening their second location in Glen Lochen this September. Less than a year ago, they opened their Farmington school after searching for something that would challenge their son who was reading numbers and letters before the age of 2. The school started in Silicon Valley in 2014 and has rapidly grown across the country. It’s now the #1 coding school in the U.S. Kids learn the foundations of technology that will eventually give them the skills to build a robot, design games and websites, and become proficient in 3D printing…an incredible experience that can transfer to every single field of work! They find that this is particularly good for kids who like math or are autistic, but Vaishali encourages all kids, especially girls, to give it a try. Find them on Facebook and Instagram or email them at glastonbury@thecoderschool.com for more information about their fall schedule. See their new location (under construction below) and some pics of their Farmington school.

NEW SALON OPENS ON HEBRON AVENUE NEAR SUBWAY

Looking for a new place to get pampered? Spa Pointe opened last week in the space between Subway and Dunkin’ on Hebron Avenue. It’s the sweetest little spot. The owner, Mihee, has paid incredible attention to detail in terms of decor and cleanliness with a state-of-the-art ventilation system at each station, liners in pedicure baths, sand glass timers, and aloe plants. Not to mention their luxurious lotions and scrubs and non-toxic polish and products. Originally from Korea, Mihee knows skincare and pampering…this is her 4th time opening this type of business. She offers one-of-a-kind manis and pedis, facials, massage, and waxing. Visit them for a truly relaxing experience. They will spoil you!

NEW LOCATION FOR UNTUCKit.....FORMER GYMBOREE SPACE FILLED

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

*SCOOP ALERT*

We will be starting our summer schedule in July and running our BUSINESS SCOOP on a less frequent basis. We hope you check back for updates from your favorite summer vacation spot and enjoy what we think is the best time of the year!

UNTUCKit OPENS NEW LOCATION

UNTUCKit opened last week in Westfarms. The men’s retailer has grown to an impressive 60 locations in just 8 years and this is their first greater Hartford store. We really wish we came up with their simple idea of creating shirts that can be worn untucked. A regular shirt just doesn’t seem to do the untuck justice, right? They are located on the upper level of the shopping center near JCPenney. To see some of their merch, click HERE.

OLD GYMBOREE SPACE FILLED

The Red Geranium has taken over the former Gymboree space in The Shops at Somerset Square. The antique shop was previously located at that old red house on the corner of Hebron Avenue and House Street. That land is now owned by Rosy Kapur of Liquid Nirvana. She plans to build new and relocate there. The Red Geranium sells antique furniture and household decor. Visit them in their new spot.

SQUARE PEG PIZZA & ARCADE CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

We get so many inquiries about this story! Construction has now started on the interior of Square Peg Pizza & Arcade. They were waiting for permits and approval. We spoke with one of the owners who said they hope to be done within a two-month time frame. Along with pizza, there will be old-school arcade games for the kids….hence the reason for all the interest. Hey kids…here’s some money, go play games while we eat in peace! At least we like to think this is how it will play out. We will keep you posted on an opening date.

JOIN THE OLDEST RUNNING POOL CLUB IN TOWN

It’s almost summer people! Do you know what you are doing with your kids for the next two and a half months? Well, we have an idea…for a little over $15 per day, you can keep them happy, busy, and entertained! (I’m sorry…what?!) Orchard Hill Pool Club has been offering this fun for families since 1941, so they are pretty much experts. FUN FACT: They were the very FIRST club of it’s kind in town and started as a pond. This gorgeous little spot off Overlook Drive has beautiful, well-maintained grounds (lots of member pride at OHC), swim and tennis teams and lessons, and a zillion events for kids and adults (Burger Nights, Movie Nights, Adult Social, Ladies Night). One of our favorite parts about this club is that you can keep your eyes on the kiddos from one spot…whether they are playing tennis, basketball, in the pool or on the playscape (kind of amazing!) We challenge you to find another way to spend so little, but get so much for an entire summer! Hit them up HERE for membership info.

ODDS & ENDS…

*The new art gallery in South Glastonbury will extend their hours for the summer. JW Frame Crafters Fine Art Gallery will be open later on Fridays. Here’s an idea…if there is a wait at Sayulita or 2 Hopewell, why not pop over and check out their gorgeous gallery? Sounds like a great way to pass the wait time! Read more about them HERE.

*Bodeau Realty Group will host their 2nd Outdoor Movie Night series at Riverfront Park this summer. There will be popcorn, face painting, and food trucks. Admission is FREE. The dates are: June 19th, June 26th, and July 3rd. The movie starts at dusk. Follow them on Facebook to find out what their feature presentations will be.

*Root Down Power Yoga in Hartford will offer Teen Yoga classes this summer. Kids ages 12 to 15 can find their OM Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:00 PM starting June 18th. If you don’t know about this amazing studio…let us tell you! 1. It’s stunning inside (exposed brick walls, gorgeous wood details, cool merchandise) 2. We took a class there and had so many life revelations…in just ONE class. That’s pretty powerful, don’t you think? To sign up your teen, click HERE.

THE LATEST ON MAX'S RESTAURANT...POPULAR BBQ SPOT CLOSED

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

MAX RESTAURANT GROUP CLOSING ONE RESTAURANT, PLANS TO OPEN ANOTHER

The Hartford Courant recently reported that Max Amore is closing at the end of this month after 25 years in business in The Shops at Somerset Square. While out and about, we heard many stories from people about the memories they have of the popular restaurant….from birthday celebrations, to engagements, or retirement parties…it was a great place to honor something special and will certainly be missed by many. BUT...(although the deal is not final)Max Restaurant Group is planning to build a new, stand-alone restaurant in town. What is confirmed is there is currently a proposal in to Town Hall for a 3-thousand square foot restaurant with outdoor seating to be built next to Bruegger’s. We suspect this is the spot, but nothing is confirmed. When all is signed and done, we will reveal their new location. Stay tuned…

GIDEON’S BBQ CLOSED

Gideon’s BBQ announced last Monday that it was their last day of business. We have reached out to them, but haven’t heard back yet. Surrounding business owners told us it seemed very abrupt, but they didn’t know why they closed. There was a big response to our initial story about this, so we know there were a lot of fans of their food. They will be missed.

UPDATES TO WOODLEDGE POOL CLUB

If you are weighing the idea of joining a pool club, we have the answer for you! Have you ever been to Woodledge on Hopewell Road? We recently visited there for the first time and it was pretty awesome. It’s like a little oasis in the middle of the woods! There was full sun on the pool (we love that…it is summer after all!), but also several shady spots, including a pavillion if you are looking to escape the direct heat. They recently renovated and have a brand new swimming pool. It’s beautiful. Some of their amenities include a diving board, tennis courts (three of which are Har Tru clay), a basketball court, toddler pool, and playground. They host all kinds of social events and offer swim and tennis teams. It seems like a no-brainer. Entertainment for the kiddos ALL. SUMMER. LONG. We got some great pictures that showcase this unique spot. Check them out below. Or, if you are interested in a membership, email membership@woodledge.org.

STOP & SHOP GOES HIGH TECH

Have you met Marty the robot at Stop & Shop on Oakwood Drive? It’s tough to miss! It scoots around the grocery store searching for spills or potential hazards to customers and then pages over the intercom what and where it is located in the store. There are cameras inside moving in all directions to detect issues. We found it fascinating and kind of want to know if they named the bot after Marty the manager (who we love)! What do you think?

FLOTATION THERAPY IN AVON

Although slightly out of our normal zone, we thought this was super interesting and had to share. There is a new flotation therapy studio opening in Avon. Imagine Float will feature three flotation rooms. The practice, which has been around for decades, includes clients submersing themselves in a tank of body-temperature shallow water filled with 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt. Epsom salt has all kinds of benefits. It promotes sleep and reduces stress, pain and swelling of the joints. The actual flotation therapy takes pressure off your muscles, joints, and bones while relieving stress. Sounds like a double-dose of amazingness! Find out more about this cool, new experience HERE.

ODDS & ENDS…

*Raonjena Coffee & Dessert is seeking approval to build an outdoor patio. All in favor, say “I”! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Obviously, we hope this passes.

*There is a beer garden coming to the Pump House in Bushnell Park this summer. Did you hear that? A BEER GARDEN!!!! The Hartford Courant reports that Hanging Hills Brewery and Hog River Brewery are teaming up with Harry’s Pizza in West Hartford to provide craft beers and food at the historic spot.

*The Manchester Scoop is reporting that there are rumors that ALDI is coming to Manchester in a development near Evergreen Walk. If you have never been, ALDI is a different way to shop. They have affordable prices on many items, but nothing is really brand name. They have other nearby locations in East Hartford and Rocky Hill.

*We recently learned that the spa space attached to Shampoo One on the East Hartford/Glastonbury line is available for rent. This is a fully built-out space that includes all the amenities. If you are looking for space to expand, click HERE for contact info or to see inside.

*Women runners or women looking to become runners…LISTEN UP! The Greater Hartford Marathon Foundation is offering a FREE 6-week training course leading up to The Red Dress Run for Women 5K on June 13th. This is a great opportunity to learn how to train for a race or just have some fun with your girls! Find info HERE.

POPULAR GYM CLEARING LAND...NEW CHIROPRACTOR IN GLEN LOCHEN

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

EDGE FITNESS CLEARS LAND BEHIND CHILI’S

The Edge Fitness is moving forward with plans to build a facility behind Chili’s in spite of a pending court appeal. The popular fitness center was approved by the town more than a year ago, but the development has been tied up by court proceedings. There is still an appeal by the owners of 80 Glastonbury Boulevard concerning zoning. This latest development appears to mean The Edge is one step closer to coming to town. We have heard they plan to be open in the next 18 months, so we will keep you posted!

MANCHESTER CHIROPRACTOR MOVES TO GLASTONBURY

Thiele Chiropractic from Manchester recently renovated and moved into space in Glen Lochen. Dr. Steve Thiele has more than three decades of experience as a chiropractor and is the only doctor in the state certified for what’s known as the Gonstead System. This method uses five criteria to adjust patients as accurately as possible. Dr. Thiele’s passion for this method and helping patients heal was apparent as we talked. Find him HERE and see their modern, new space below.

MODERN WEALTH MANAGEMENT FIRM OPENS OFFICE IN TOWN

Just two years ago, co-workers and financial advisors, Brian Sheehan, Matt Maclean and Alex Gomez started their own wealth management firm.  In that time, Rossmore Private Capital, named after the homestead of Brian’s grandfather in Cork, Ireland (we always love the story behind a name!) has had impressive, organic growth. They recently renovated and moved into an ultra-modern, yet inviting space at 628 Hebron Avenue (the five story building near Healthtrax). The three partners established this high net worth firm based on simple principles of trust and value to clients. These standards, along with their trust management service…Brian and Matt even serve as trustees for some of their clients…have helped distinguish them in this field.  Check out their gorgeous new office below.

MOBILE SALON COMES TO YOU

Lauren Mechanic spends her days bringing salon services to her clients’ doorsteps. How great is that? Her mobile salon, Lauren & Co. is a full service salon based out of a recreational vehicle. Yes, that’s right, an RV!! She gutted the inside and turned it into a salon-on-the-go. It has everything, a sink with a hair washing seat, two chairs for cut and color, a waiting area, and some fun beverages too. She keeps things in place with bolts and some Velcro (so smart!). If you see her around town, give her a wave or book a service online HERE.

Doesn’t yoga in a treehouse sound amazing?! Well, it will soon feel that way for Fuller Yoga fans. The yoga studio is moving to new space in the triangle-esque point of Glen Lochen. It’s a striking location from both the inside and outside. The space is currently being transformed and they plan to open there July 1st. It’s very peaceful and we can’t wait to get our Om on in this lovely space. Get a sneak peak during their pop-up yoga class June 1st 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Check their website for details.

NEW GYM RENOVATING SPACE ON COMMERCE

A new gym is coming to Commerce Street. Fearless Fitness will open at 98 Commerce Street in former office space in a building next to The Irish American Home. This will be the 4th location for owner, Brandon Rocco, who started in West Hartford and has grown rapidly in just two years. They use youth volunteers 14 and up (with adult mentors and an executive chef) to help cook 100% organic meals and deliver them to patients and their families every week for 12 weeks. BREWING UNDERWAY IN S. GLASTONBURY....GENO BUYS CAVEYS

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

BEER BREWING IN SOUTH GLASTONBURY

We have been following the progress on the new brewery in South Glastonbury and beer brewing is now underway! The owners of Hops on the Hill farm brewery off Dug Road have put their heart and soul into transforming this old tobacco barn into a beautiful space in an even more beautiful setting. Brewer, Phil Lohr started brewing beer last week to prepare for opening. He says they’re modeling the brewing process after the German beer culture…a slow and deliberate method that is tried and true. Right now, they’re brewing a Citrus IPA, Light German Lager, and a Nut Brown Ale. We are so pumped…they plan to open this July! To become an integral part of their community and support their growth, contribute to their GoFundMe page. And, see updates on the building process below.

AURIEMMA BUYS CAVEYS IN MANCHESTER

Last month, we heard from multiple sources that Geno Auriemma was going to buy Caveys, but there was some mixed information about whether it was true….WELL IT IS! The Hartford Courant confirmed this Friday. The restaurant has been an institution on East Street in Manchester for years…drawing customers from surrounding towns for it’s delicious French and Italian food and upscale atmosphere. We have celebrated several milestones there and are so excited that it will remain in some capacity. Although details are scarce, we have heard through a few sources that Auriemma will turn the bottom floor into a banquet style facility and the top into an Italian/Steak restaurant. The Hartford Courant reports that Geno will talk more about it this week. Stay tuned…

GIOVANNI’S OUTDOOR PLANS

Giovanni’s Pizza is seeking approval from the town for an OUTDOOR BAR on their patio. They had us at outdoor bar. They are also looking to install an awning, but there are some concerns from the TPZ committee about how this will look. This is such a great place for families. They are so tolerant of all that comes with kiddos and we love them for it. We also love their patio! We will let you know how it turns out.

ODDS & ENDS…

*We are keeping an eye on the opening of a new spa next to Subway on Hebron Avenue. Spa Pointe is currently renovating the former Sundance Salon & Spa space. Who doesn’t love another spot to get pampered?! They hope to open in the next few weeks…we will keep you posted.

*This Wednesday, there will be a meeting at Town Hall about the Putnam Bridge Multi-Use Trail Connection. The walkway over the bridge is complete, but there is currently no access from Glastonbury or Wethersfield, so the walkway remains closed. The CT DOT will provide updates about the project. If you are interested, the meeting starts at 6:30 PM.

Glastonbury residents, Dan and Lindsay LeBlanc recently opened River East Power Equipment in East Hartford.  The shop has been a labor of love and devotion for Dan, who started in three small trailers behind his Dad and brother’s Auto Repair Shop on Tolland Street with NO HEAT.  He used to come in every morning to frozen tools and would have to use a space heater to warm them up.  That sure sounds like passion to us!  Dan specializes in small engine repair and service and also sells Gravely lawn equipment and Ariens snowblowers.  His shop has an old school mom and pop feel where customer support and satisfaction is paramount.  Did we mention he picks up and delivers equipment in need of fixing or a tune-up? How great is that?  They have some awesome grand opening deals running right now.  Find them HERE.

BEAUTIFUL SPACE FOR KIDS YOGA STUDIO

Next Sunday, May 5th, The Dreaming Tree Yoga Studio will hold a Grand Opening. Owner, Emily Keel recently renovated space in Glen Lochen and it’s a beautiful oasis. She is offering yoga and mindfulness classes for children ages 3 to 12 years old, including those with ADHD and Autism. There is currently space left in one summer camp, but there will be some FREE classes after the opening. Space is limited and you must sign up during the Grand Opening on Sunday. Click HERE for more info and see the new space below.

NEW BREW FOR THE HARTFORD MARATHON

The Hartford Marathon Foundation will now offer a specialized beer at their races throughout New England including the Eversource Hartford Marathon this October. 26.2 Brew (love that name!) from Marathon Brewing Company (an offshoot of The Boston Beer Company) is a golden, hazy ale brewed with Himalayan sea salt and coriander. It has just 9 CARBS and 120 CALORIES. Wowza! Sounds amazing. CHEERS TO A GREAT RACE!

ODDS & ENDS…

*The owners of Square Peg Pizza & Arcade are targeting to open the restaurant in the old Piatti space June 1st. They are still awaiting approval from the town on their renovation plans. We will keep you posted!

*The Glastonbury Children’s Tag Sale Spring Sale is May 3rd and 4th 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the POC on Hopewell Road. Look for their sign.

*Glastonbury Parks & Rec is looking for LEGO donations. You can drop them off at 2143 Main Street Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Great way to clean house for a good cause!

*Soarin’ Indoors in Manchester was recently forced to close their doors, because the new owners of the building where they were located on North Main Street did not want to renew their lease and they are unable to support a new build-out.  We never made it there, but heard this was a great place for kids looking to conquer some amazing life skills…balance, strength, fear We hope to see them somewhere else soon.

*We just read in The Hartford Business Journal that The Spigot Cafe is under new ownership and will remain OPEN. The Journal reports that the future of the more than half a century-old bar was uncertain after the death of the long time owner. We have great memories of this spot in the city’s West End. It’s old school and kind of a dive bar (which we love). They will be mixing the old with some new services and have lots of great beers on tap…visit this iconic spot and see for yourself.

S. GLASTONBURY ART GALLERY...NEW BREWERY IN COLCHESTER

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

NEW ART GALLERY IN SOUTH GLASTONBURY

Tucked away behind the new frame shop in South Glastonbury is a beautiful new art gallery. JW Frame Crafters recently took over the space of the former framer next to Carrie Draghi Photography on Main Street. In the back of the shop, owner Joel Kurlan created a gorgeous gallery with artwork from a few talented, local artists. The work of Lynn Damon, Rob Skinnon, Don Brone, and Clinton Deckert are all on display. This is the second location for the framing business, which was started by Joel’s mom in Plainville. He has been honing his craft since he was 8 years old. His mom propped him on a milk crate and had him cut mats for her when she owned the business. He has been doing it ever since. His custom, hand-cut frames are quite beautiful. Check out his website HERE and click on the video to hear Joel’s personal story. We loved it and you will too!

BREWERY OPENS IN COLCHESTER

Hop Culture Farms & Brewing Co. opened this past weekend in Colchester. The farm brewery on Cato Corner Road is run by a husband and wife team who grow their own hops on the farm. They have an assortment of farms brews with fun names like Juicy in the 8-6-0, Hop of Shame, and Goats + Hoes. Check out some pics below or visit them to taste for yourself.

POOL CLUB OFFERING GREAT DEAL

Minnechaug Swim & Tennis Club is offering memberships for $800 to new families for their first year. That’s just $57 a week and $8 a day for the summer. Think about it…something to do EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. for the entire summer. Amazing, right?! Listen to all the unique things about this club: 1. Only club in town with a heated pool (this matters in June, trust us!) 2. Only club with lighted, Har-Tru tennis courts. 3. Swim and tennis lessons included with cost (fo.r real!). 4. Playscape/basketball court/fire pit and a social schedule that will keep you busy all summer long. For more information, click HERE and tell them we sent you.

JEFFERSON RADIOLOGY OFFERS 3D IMAGING

This is so near and dear to us that we had to share. Jefferson Radiology is now offering 3D imaging. That doesn’t sound too exciting, until you see the difference between 2D and 3D and how it is impacting patients. The detail of 3D is unreal and greatly reduces the potential for additional exams. Think about this…when women go for a mammogram and get called back, it’s terrifying. These machines allow radiologists to see a clearer, more detailed image and give patients better care…a total win-win. They are currently switching out every single machine to 3D and will have them all up and running by July. Look at the rose test below to see the difference.

ODDS AND ENDS…

*Sign-ups for local CSA’s are underway. There are CSA shares available at Beckett Farms, Deercrest Farm, Dondero Orchards, Killam & Bassett Farmstead, Shenstone Gardens (860.614.8974), and Wind Hill Community Farm. Check out their individual pages by clicking on their names for more information.

SHOPS ON MAIN RECAP....HIGH END MOVIE THEATER IN W. HARTFORD

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

NEW BUILDING UP AT SHOPS ON MAIN

The 2nd building at the Shops on Main next to McDonald’s is coming along. There will eventually be four buildings on that site. Last month, the Town Plan and Zoning Commission approved a more than 10-thousand square foot building as part of the development. There will be a restaurant (we think Mission BBQ - see below), Aspen Dental, and a vet. In a few short weeks, we will reveal one of the tenants of the newest building…a SECOND location for an already popular spot in town. See below for the initial drawing of this entire site to get an idea of what it will look like when complete.

WEST HARTFORD MOVIE THEATER TO GO HIGH END

Grab your friends for some serious fun in West Hartford! The movie theater in Blue Black Square is currently undergoing renovations to make it a high end theater…Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas. There will be reclining seats, push button waiter service from the seats or an app, and upscale concessions. Sounds amazing! They plan to reopen this summer.

NEWINGTON CHIROPRACTOR OPENS OFFICE IN TOWN

Dr. Eric Damato has a location in Newington, but recently opened this satellite location at 1420 Main Street. They offer everything from chiropractic care, to massage, and exercise therapy. CHAMBER FUNDRAISER TO HELP PREVENT SUICIDE

It’s the third year for the CT River Valley Chamber fundraiser, Bids, Bites, & Beer. The event, on April 25th at the Holiday Inn in East Hartford, will help benefit the Jordan Porco Foundation. Parents, Ernie and Marisa Porco lost their son, Jordan, to suicide 8 years ago, when he was a freshman in college. They have made it their mission to help prevent suicide, promote mental health, and create a message of hope for young adults. The statistics are startling…suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 24. Click HERE for tickets.

MAIN STREET BUILDINGS SOLD...NEW ONLINE BOUTIQUE

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

TWO BUILDINGS ON MAIN STREET SOLD TO NEW OWNERS

The two buildings on Main Street across from the fountain in the center of town have been sold to new owners. This is where Wang Palace, Liquid Nirvana, Bollywood, Cycling Concepts, and Sign Wiz Signs & Graphics are located. The deal has been in the works for awhile, but they recently closed on the buildings. We have been told by the new owners they will eventually develop the properties. One possibility includes bringing the building that sits back up to the street with parking behind it. There are obviously different options and lots of approvals to get through before anything happens. We will keep you posted, but think this is pretty exciting!

GLASTONBURY RESIDENT LAUNCHES BOUTIQUE CLOTHING WEBSITE

Brittany Beckwith has always had a knack for fashion. The UConn grad majored in fashion merchandising and later worked for an agency in New York City where she learned many tricks of the trade. After moving to Glastonbury to be closer to home, she decided to use that expertise to start something of her own. Her online clothing boutique, Olive French, is named after her adorable French bulldog (see pic below) and features a mix of trends. Brittany says she chooses clothing that helps clients build a wardrobe, but also mixes in some other pieces that are on trend to keep things fresh. She searches for looks that appear high-end, but are more affordable. You can get a first-hand look at her merchandise during a pop-up shop at Rooftop 120 May 9th at 4:30 PM.  To see all of her latest offerings, follow her on Insta or Facebook.

TOWN WILL ALLOW BREWERY TO HAVE FOOD TRUCKS/MUSIC ON PROPERTY

The town passed a request by Hops on the Hill Brewery in South Glastonbury to have food trucks and acoustic music. Breweries often allow patrons to bring their own food, but this will be another option. The brewery, off Dug Road, is expected to open this summer. Check out recent picks of their development below.

They go to all kinds of events, like weddings, parties, festivals, galas, or business gatherings. You and your guests can party like you are in the heart of Ireland. This might be the coolest thing EVV-ERRR. Co-owners, Damien Cashman and Troy Stuckey dreamt up the idea over drinks in, what else but a pub, and drew their plans on a napkin (LOVE THAT!). They then took an old trailer and renovated it themselves, considering every detail to make guests feel like they’re in a traditional Irish Pub. They can also book bagpipers, traditional Irish music, and Celtic rock bands to add to the fun. Find them on Instagram to follow their trail of green. And, check out their traveling PUB below.

This is where you will find C’est La Vie Day Spa, where we experienced, first hand, the magic of owner, Karine Wielock. The French-born esthetician, is an expert in her field and it shows in the face of every client who walks through her door. We saw results after ONE facial. Amazing, right?! There are multiple treatments offered at the spa, including facials, peels, waxing, therapeutic massage, botox and cosmetic fillers (administered by a doctor). For a look at just how much Karine has impacted her clients, check out the video below.

ELIXIR COMPANY LAUNCHES THIS APRIL...THE EDGE FITNESS UPDATE

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

NEW FLAVORING COMPANY SET TO LAUNCH

Kazaam Elixirs is pretty cool if you ask us. It’s a line of flavored elixirs that can be added to any beverage, including beer. The company, started by Josh Scavetta (a Glastonbury-native) and Shyam Kulkarni, is set to launch their line of unique and delightful flavorings this April. And…this one-of-a-kind brand is made right here in Glastonbury! They have a warehouse next to Oakwood Golf at the end of Oakwood Drive. We were excited to taste test their product and it delivers. The brightness of their orange and pineapple turned an ordinary Bud Light into an exciting new beverage. And, the watermelon and apple flavors in a made-just-for-us mixed drink were inviting and flavorful. Did we mention elixir means a magical or medicinal potion? Hmmm, seems fitting. FUN FACT: In a blind taste test, executives from one beverage company chose the orange flavored Kazaam drink over their own orange flavored drink. Say what? That’s impressive. Look for them soon in stores and establishments.

BREWERY COMING TO EAST HARTFORD

A new craft brewery is coming to Main Street in East Hartford. Paddle Creek Beer Company will be located at 1277-1287 Main Street near Cheek’s Chicken & Waffles. Check them out on Facebook to see some of their past products. They plan to open this fall!

THE EDGE FITNESS UPDATE

We get a lot of questions about the status of the proposal for The Edge Fitness behind Chili’s in town. The town passed plans for the project to move forward, but there is currently an ongoing lawsuit between The Edge and the owners of 80 Glastonbury Boulevard over zoning. The latest is that the zoning appeal is scheduled for trial this April. In other words, it’s stuck in court. Anything can happen between now and then and we will be sure to keep you updated! On another note, We-Ha.com reports that The Edge Fitness will open in Corbin’s Corner in West Hartford after plans were recently approved there. Below is a photo of one of their locations.

PILATES STUDIO NEAR WHOLE FOODS...NEW RESTAURANT NEXT TO BRUEGGERS

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

PILATES CHAIN COMING TO WHOLE FOODS PLAZA

Club Pilates is going into the vacant space between Foxy Pizza and The Eyeglass Place. The fitness chain, which started in San Diego 12 years ago, has hundreds of locations across the U.S. and Canada. Their classes are Reformer-based, but integrate modern practices. The Glastonbury location is expected to open by the end of this year. We included some pictures from their site and a look at the exterior of one of their locations below.

NEW RESTAURANT COMING TO VACANT RAFFA’S LOT

A developer is looking to build a new restaurant in the empty lot next to Bruegger’s Bagels on Main Street. There is a proposal for a more than 3-thousand square foot restaurant with almost 200 seats. There will be indoor and outdoor dining. This is the former location of the once-popular Raffa’s.

DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR HORSE FARM ON BELL STREET

A new neighborhood is proposed for Hillside Stable on Bell Street. Developers have submitted plans for a 29-lot housing development. We mentioned several months ago that the land was being surveyed for this reason. Over the years, many different developers have looked at the land, but nothing has come to fruition. It’s a peaceful, tucked-away setting with beautiful views. Check out the layout of the proposed “Stallion Ridge” neighborhood below.

NEW MANAGEMENT FOR MINNECHAUG GOLF COURSE

A new management company will take over Minnechaug Golf Course. Guilmette Golf, run by brothers, Chris and Matt Guilmette, will manage the property. Chris lives in town and told us they’ll maintain and grow what Glastonbury Hills Country Club did for the course. Guilmette Golf played an integral part in transforming Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford. Have you been there recently? It was rated as the #2 best place to play golf in Connecticut by Golf Week in 2018. Impressive! We can’t wait to see what they do for Minnechaug! The last picture below is a gorgeous shot of Keney Park Golf Course.

OLD CHURCH ON HEBRON AVENUE TO BE RENOVATED

The vacant church on Hebron Avenue across from Rose’s Berry Farm stand is being purchased by the owners of Educational Playcare. They plan to renovate the church and offer before and after school programs as well as summer camp programs for elementary school kids. Their Glastonbury location is located directly next to the church. They also have 18 other locations throughout the state.

SMITH BROTHERS FUNDRAISER INVOLVES KIDS HELPING OTHER KIDS

Do you know about Kids 4 Kids? If you don’t, listen up! It’s an amazing way to get your kids involved in giving back to the community…because…isn’t that what life is all about? Seven years ago, Smith Brothers President and CEO, Joe Smith and Kieran Callahan, co-founded this charity basketball tournament to instill the value of philanthropy and community in kids. Here’s how it works…kids coordinate (with help from parents), a team of 3 to 5 players, come up with a team name and their own shirts. On Sunday, March 17th, they play against each other by grade level. For more information about this worthwhile cause, go to www.kidsforkidsct.com.

ODDS AND ENDS…

There is an incredible new space for children opening in Glen Lochen. The Dreaming Tree Children’s Yoga & Mindfulness Studio, owned by Glastonbury-resident, Emily Keel, will open on the second floor this Spring. So, she started an after-school yoga program and the response was overwhelming. ESCAPE ROOM OPENS IN ROCKY HILL...BLIND WOMAN LAUNCHES WELLNESS BUSINESS

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

NEW ESCAPE ROOM OPENS IN ROCKYHILL

There is a fun new spot in Rocky Hill and we had to share. Codeword Escape Room Adventures opened a few months ago on the Silas Deane Highway. It’s a pretty cool concept. Essentially, there is a room filled with puzzles and participants must work together to complete the ‘mission’, or in some cases, escape in 60 minutes. It’s a great spot for families or office gatherings, so everyone can learn to work as a team. Check out their website for pricing and info. Right now, they are running a fun Valentine’s Day special for couples!

BLIND WOMAN LAUNCHES WELLNESS BUSINESS

If you think you can’t do something, you need to read this! Susanne Cesana is quite an amazing individual. Blind since she was 11 years old, she has proved over and over in her life that not being able to see won’t stop her. Recently, the 65-year old launched her own wellness business, Empowered Lifestyle. She educates clients about nutrition and plant-based medicine, including pure essential oils. She also endorses a ketogenic diet. Her business name comes from her repeat mantra…that living like this is an Empowered Lifestyle, because YOU have the tools to make you feel your best. She is motivated by her three grandkids. And, oh, no big deal or anything, but she runs half marathons! Find her on Facebook.

NEW ORANGE THEORY IN MANCHESTER

There is a new Orangetheory Fitness opening in Manchester. It’s located in the same plaza as Trader Joe’s a few doors down. The Manchester location is owned by the same people who own Glastonbury. If you don’t know, you can join one Orangetheory and attend any location. So convenient! We hear they expect to open Manchester sometime in March.

STRAND SALON ADDS “BAR”

Have you noticed that we love highlighting when businesses do unique things? Strand Salon recently added a processing/refreshment bar. What can you get at said “bar”? Coffee, tea, wine (excuse me?!), infused water, homemade biscotti, phone chargers, wifi, Netflix. We might just go there and hang out! Not really, but sounds fab. Check it out below.

FOUNDER OF KINDNESS ROCKS PROJECT COMING TO GLASTONBURY

The kindness is literally radiating from this story! Megan Murphy, the Founder of The Kindness Rocks Project is visiting Glastonbury at the end of February. Her connection to town started when resident, Lori Lucey, created the Kindness Rocks Garden at Hopewell School. Lori has been chosen as a Kindness Rocks Movement Ambassador to help spread the word of kindness organically. We are so proud and happy for her! Talk about someone who has found their calling. Back to Megan Murphy’s visit…she will be the guest of honor at a book signing for her new book, A Pebble for Your Thoughts at Riverbend Book Shop on February 25th from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. The following day, Megan is kicking off a nationwide speaking tour right here in Glastonbury and will give a private presentation to students at Hopewell called ‘The I in Kind’. DAYCARE NEXT TO MELZEN'S...CARINI DEVELOPMENT PLANS

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR CARINI BERRY FARM

Last week, we told you a developer from West Hartford is looking to buy Carini’s Berry Farm. Plans were submitted to Town Hall for initial review. Concerns raised by town officials about the plans include getting sewers to the site, wetlands, and traffic, among others. This was a big story for us last week. The response was quite emotional, understandably. However, we ask that you consider all the facts and not pass judgement on what is an extremely difficult situation for this family. We will follow any updates and bring them to you. See the development layout below.

A LOOK INSIDE THE NORTHAMPTON MARIJUANA DISPENSARY

We are intrigued by all types of business and one that is particularly interesting right now is the marijuana business. As the legislature gets ready to debate the possibility of legalizing recreational marijuana use, we thought it would be interesting to see inside a dispensary, so we visited NETA (New England Treatment Access) in Northampton, MA. MA recently legalized recreational marijuana use. Traffic is busy leading up to it, but four police officers stationed outside keep things moving smoothly. Inside, visitors are given a menu of available options to look at while in line. We didn’t know what to expect, but the inside looks more like a technology retail store than a pot shop. It’s clean, modern, well-organized and very efficient. Customers go to individual stations with a computer and an associate. They can ask questions about different products or order whatever they choose. Everything is kept behind the counters, categorized and labeled. Packaging is retro-style and even a bit futuristic. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, the outcome of this bill will certainly be interesting to watch.

CARINI BERRY FARM POTENTIAL SALE...GYMBOREE CLOSING IN SOMERSET

HERE’S THE SCOOP…

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE FOR CARINI BERRY FARM

We recently heard that Carini Berry Farm will possibly sell to a housing developer out of West Hartford. The story behind the sale is heartbreaking. The owner of the land, who is a Carini by birth, lost her son who had been tending to the farm. He left behind a family, including his wife and three girls. Development plans, which propose a subdivision of 19 homes, were submitted to Town Hall last week and are under initial review. Residents living nearby would like to see this tucked-away gem, off Chestnut Hill Road, saved. There are many parts that need to fall in place before anything happens, including a concrete sale and a checklist of town approvals. We will keep you posted on how this plays out.

POPULAR CHILDREN’S RETAIL STORE CLOSING (Scoop from our intern, Madison Schulman)

Gymboree recently filed for bankruptcy and is beginning to close all of it’s 540 stores, including the one located in The Shops at Somerset Square. This is the second time the retail giant has filed for Chapter 11. They are closing their Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores so they can focus on their Janie and Jack brand.

NEW RESTAURANT AT BUCK’S CORNER, by Madison Schulman

A new Chinese food restaurant recently opened in Buck’s Corner near Lotties. The Golden House is run by two cousins, Alex Cheng and JiaFei Dong. They also have a location in Durham, CT. The restaurant offers traditional Chinese food with a healthy twist. They steam many of their dishes and toss them in your choice of sauce as opposed to frying directly in oil. Their extensive menu boasts many different classics such as fried rice, chicken lo mein and honey chicken. Favorites such as General Tso’s Chicken and Sesame Chicken are made somewhat differently, focusing on using only white meat. They also do takeout. Stop in for a taste and tell them we sent you.

- The demolition of the old Red Geranium took place last week. This property has been purchased by Rosy Kapur, owner of Liquid Nirvana. They plan to build something new in that location. Construction will start this Spring.

-You may have noticed a wire fence at the corner of Hebron Avenue and Sycamore Street. This is in preparation for demolition of those buildings to make way for 400 Hebron Avenue. We showed you a drawing a of this new building a few months ago. It will be 20,000 square feet and include retail and restaurant space. See below.

-Demolition of the interior of the old Piatti is complete, making way for Square Peg Pizza & Arcade. They are looking to reopen the drive through behind the building for use as a convenient way to pick up take out. That is being reviewed this week at Town Hall.
